What defines you is what you stand for. Don't spend your limited time in trying to please others. You will eventually realise that you just can't please everyone, but in an attempt to do that, somewhere, you will lose your identity.

Remember, a friend to all is a friend to none.

So just be true to your beliefs and be prepared to be loved by some and hated by others. Infact, that is a perfect litmus test for a man of character. Mend, bend, fight, convince or debate but never succumb to pressure and be something you aren't.
